Dar El-Maaref is actually the oldest publishing house in Egypt. It was built in 1890 by Shafiq Mitry, a Christian Lebanese entrepreneur. At the time, it was co-owned by him and by the Zeidans who later started Dar El-Hilal. Dar El-Maaref started as a printing house. A researcher who is about to discuss his dissertation on the history of the institution in the coming few days was able to count 16,000 titles published over the years. Nowadays, we publish 40 new titles every year, which is a very good figure.

1943 saw the pinnacle of Dar El-Maaref’s success, when Taha Hussein took over and started a book series Iqraa (Read), which still exists today. He made some rules that we still follow. Iqraa presents a good book by a great writer and for a really low price. At first, it sold for pt 2, and then it became pt 5. Today it sells for LE 4, and you can buy it during book fairs for LE 3.

Dar El-Maaref was the first institution to pay attention to conserving the heritage. It was also the first to start translating books from English, which was also one of Hussein’s ideas. He published a series of translations of Shakespeare’s works. Today, these are the best translations around, and we keep publishing new editions because they were done by the best.

And from the beginning, Dar El-Maaref paid a lot of attention to children. One of our bestsellers is the Green Library for children. It contains 53 titles that are so in demand all over the Arab world
