The movie is based on the novel by the same title, which has been the best seller in Egypt over the last decade .“ Imaret Yacoubian” took the Arab literary establishment by storm, as the novel does not shy away from weaving sordid tales of political corruption, sexuality, and torture in the story elements that could potentially seen the book banned. The story and the film express all these elements through the lives of the residence of the building that represent segments within the Egyptian society.

عمارة يعقوبيان

عمارة فى وسط مدينة القاهرة، تسكنها طبقات اجتماعية متباينة بعد الثورة، من أقدمهم زكى بك الدسوقى الذى تربى فيهان فهو ابن عبدالعال باشا الدسوقى الوزير السابق ومن اقطاب حزب الوفد، الذى اقتصت الثورة الكثير من أطيانه، ورغم ذلك فهو يحب النساء، خاصة بثينة التى تتكفل بأسرتها، عن طريق المتاجرة بجسدها، تتزوج من زكى باشا بعد معاناة عاشها زكى مع أخته دولت. فى العمارة أيضًا الحاج عزام الذى بدأ من الصفر، عندما كان ماسح أحذية، فصار ثريًا، ثم عضوًا فى مجلس الشعب، يتزوج من أرملة شابة ثم يطلقها لأنها حملت منه رغمًا عن إرادته. أما حاتم رشيد فهو صحفى شاذ جنسيًا، له مكانته فى الوسط الاجتماعى، يمارس علاقة مع جندى الأمن المركزى عبد ربه ويتركه بعد أن مات ابنه، ويموت على يد عشيق جديد. وعلى سطح العمارة يعيش ملاك الترزى الذى يطمع أن يشارك زكى بك فى المحل، تعانى شقيقة زكى من أخيها وتطرده من العمارة، بينما تعيش كرستين، صديقة زكى القديمة، وصاحبة البار، وتحاول مساعدة زكى فى محنته إلى أن يتزوج من بثينة.
